FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Nineteen people are without a home after a fire ripped through their apartment Monday evening.

Fayetteville Fire Fighters responded to an apartment fire at 2109 Elvira Street in the Carriage Hills Apartment complex around 5:50 p.m. Monday.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-story building with fire and smoke visible through the roof. All occupants were able to get out of the building safely and the fire was controlled in 45 minutes. Five of the apartment's eight units were damaged, displacing 19 people.

The American Red Cross is assisting those families.

One firefighter was injured while battling the blaze and was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment. He was released from the hospital Monday night.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time, but authorities believe it was accidental.
