Chinese drywall victims in Riverview face new threat

RIVERVIEW, FL -

Doreen and Vinny Ernandez hoped a Rivercrest Neighborhood home would where they would enjoy his retirement.

News Channel 8 reported on their plight back in 2009. Almost a year ago, they moved out for health reasons.

"The house has Chinese dry wall," said Doreen Ernandez.

Since three different drywall makers supplied the faulty building material, none will accept responsibility for fixing it.

"All the appliances were going. Refrigerator. The dishwasher. Everything was dying in there," said Vinny Ernandez.

Their homeowner's association sent a letter, threatening a $100-per-day fine for weeds in their grass.

But when 8 On Your side showed up at the H.O.A. fining committee meeting, things changed.

"They said that I'm in compliance. As of Friday I was not, and as of today, I am," said Doreen Ernandez.

She speculated the News Channel 8 reporter/photographer was the reason for their change of heart.

Her husband agreed.

"Thank God you guys showed up. Because we had to pay a fine on Friday, and today we don't," said Vinny.

However, the Rivercrest H.O.A. president says the camera had nothing to do with the fine waiver.  Joe McGee says the Ernandez home and 35 others had fines waived after taking steps to fix problems.

He said people with special circumstances, like Chinese dry wall, only need to talk to the board.

"We have a lot of compassion. And if they need more time, we give em more time. If they need extended periods, yes, we give it to 'em," he said.
