WILMINGTON, N.C. -

Nearly two dozen school buses in New Hanover County were vandalized over the weekend, forcing some pick-up delays for some students in the Wilmington area.

WECT, the NBC affiliate in Wilmington, spoke with Chief Communications Officer of New Hanover Schools, who said someone cut the acceleration line on 20 different buses at Laney Bus Garage.

School officials told WECT they estimate a cost of damage to be between $14,000 and $18,000, including labor cost to fix the buses.

The NHCS Transportation Department will double up several routes Monday afternoon to get students home on time.

Transportation Director Ken Nance told WECT the buses should be back in service beginning Dec. 2.
