North Carolina public school officials say they are doing better at tracking the performance and pay of teachers in the North Carolina Virtual Public School after a state audit found lapses.
State Auditor Beth Wood's office released a report Monday that said investigators found enrollment shortcomings. About 50,000 students take part in online classes to keep up with course work, study subjects unavailable locally, prepare for tests or seek career planning help.
Auditors say they found too many people were able to enroll students. That is important because virtual-school teacher salaries rose if they taught more students. But auditors also say they found no evidence teachers were overpaid.
Auditors say teacher evaluations weren't systematic enough.
State school officials say they made improvements this summer, when auditors were finishing their review.
