JACKSONVILLE, FL (WFLA) -

Obie, a 7-year-old dachshund that has shed more than 50 pounds in the past year made a stop in Jacksonville, Florida this month.

The public recently had a chance to meet Obie at a camp site in Jacksonville and a park in Atlantic Beach.

The stop marked the beginning of a national tour that took the once 77 pound dog to the sunshine state…before stops in Texas, Arizona and California. The meet and greets are part of a campaign to promote obesity prevention and education.

In the past year, Obie has become a Facebook-sensation, shedding more than 50 pounds and picking up more than 145,000 ‘likes’ on Facebook.

Obie, who once weighed more than twice his normal body weight could barely walk when his owners relinquished him to dog rescuer in Portland, OR last year.

In April Obie underwent surgery to remove excess skin resulting from the massive amount of weight lost. In all, 2.5 pounds of excess skin were removed from him. Days later he up walking in the woods and has not slowed down since.
