Driver allegedly tweets she was drunk before crash

Authorities are investigating a deadly wrong-way collision that killed two girls after learning the driver allegedly tweeted she was drunk just hours before the accident on a busy South Florida highway.

Twenty-year-old driver Kayla Mendoza was headed the wrong way on the Sawgrass Expressway around 1:45 a.m. Sunday when she slammed into Kaitlyn Ferrante's car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ferrante died Thursday. Her passenger, 21-year-old Marisa Catronio, died on scene Sunday.

According to the driver's Twitter page, she tweeted '2 drunk 2 care' hours before the accident. In her profile, Mendoza describes herself as a 'pothead princess' and tweets several references to smoking blunts and breaking bongs. Her November tweets included, '2 high 2 care,' 'can't sleep without my bedtime blunt' and 'I really am so baked right now.' The Miami New Times first reported on Mendoza's Twitter account.

Mendoza is hospitalized in serious condition, according to FHP.

Sgt. Mark Wysocky says the agency is aware of Mendoza's tweets and is investigating.

The news of the tweets broke Thursday as hundreds gathered for Catronio's viewing service and a candlelight vigil for Ferrante.

"She just spread happiness all over the place, wherever she went," Christine Ferrante said.

She told WFOR-TV Miami that her daughter's heart was donated.

"I didn't need a blood alcohol test," the victim's father, Gary Catronio, said. "This person was drunk and on a suicide mission."
