WNCN raises awareness about pancreatic cancer by wearing purple

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month and today, Nov. 22, is "Purple with a Purpose" Day.

By wearing purple, you can show your support to those suffering from the disease and to those researching for a cure.

Pancreatic cancer is currently the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, but is expect to become the second in 2020.

According to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 45,000 Americans will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone.

"We need more Americans to get involved in the pancreatic cancer movement by take specific actions in November to continue to raise national awareness and drive others to do the same," said Julie Fleshman, president and CEO of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Pancreatic cancer facts:

  • Pancreatic cancer is the tenth most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and has moved from the tenth to the ninth most commonly diagnosed in women.
  • Risk Factors for developing pancreatic cancer include family history of the disease, age, chronic or hereditary pancreatitis, smoking, obesity and long-standing diabetes.
  • Pancreatic cancer is one of the nation's deadliest cancers with a five-year relative survival rate of just 6 percent. An estimated 73 percent of patients will die in the first year of diagnosis.
