LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) - Lakeland Police put Southwest Middle School on lockdown after receiving a report of a man with a gun on campus Thursday morning. The lockdown was lifted in the afternoon. The school will return to the normal schedule with dismissal at 3:45 p.m.

Police said they found a BB gun at a home north of the school campus in the same area where the alleged gunman was initially seen.

Public Information Officer Gary Gross says detectives talked to an adult male at that house but do not plan to file any charges.

According to LPD,  a man was seen outside of the school building around 10:45 a.m. at 2815 Eden Parkway. Police said, a student spotted what he described as a Hispanic male off campus just north of the school waving a gun in the air. The student alerted the school administrators.

Shortly after, a group of students on campus who were part of the school's TV news team were shooting a story. One of them saw a man matching the suspect's description who had a black backpack. The student said the man jumped the fence and came on to school property. The students ran to tell school officials.

The school was put on lockdown, but students were not evacuated, according to the officials. LPD had crews on the ground and in air. Officers also went through each room at the school. There have been no signs of the intruder.

Students at the school are safe, the lockdown is now lifted, police said. Concerned parents gathered at the Southgate Shopping Center parking lot near a hardware store, police said.
