Pasco Co. neighbors unhappy about Hindu temple

Pasco County resident Tina Breitbarth is not happy about a Hindu temple that relocated to her neighborhood. Pasco County resident Tina Breitbarth is not happy about a Hindu temple that relocated to her neighborhood.

After 40 years of living on Pine Forest Road in rural Pasco County, Tina Breitbarth has serious concerns about her new neighbor, the Shree Mariamman Kali Temple.

"They're sacrificing goats. So we have to listen to the goats screaming. They're there from 6:30 in the morning until 1:30 or 2:30 at night beating on drums and humming, it's a ruckus," said Brietbarth.

She has photos a neighbor took of a goat, and pens with animal blood on the ground that she fears will contaminate the pond and her well water. She also says the group put up a shed and carport without permits.

The temple relocated last month from a site in Hillsborough County. The temple had to leave because the property wasn't zoned for a church and they had no parking.

The new location in Pasco county was a former Jehovah's Witness Hall. The congregation has been working on the property.

Temple priest Chris Chooyick said the temple held a special grand opening over the weekend.

"We decided to buy a few chickens, kill it and cook and eat and celebrate after everything finished. So it's not something we do every week or everyday," said Chooyick.  He denied any goats were sacrificed.

He said in the future, drums will beat for a few hours Saturday evenings and at times from 11 a.m. to the evening on Sundays.

Chooyick admitted county code enforcement has come out several times, and they are now working to come into compliance.

The temple has applied for permits for the structures that it put out back and made other changes.

Not all neighbors have concerns about the Hindu Temple. Elizabeth Mancini lives across the street.

"Seem to be very quiet in what they do, I have no problem with them. I have my religion, they have theirs. They have drums, my religion has an organ and a piano," said Mancini.
