GRAHAM, N.C. -

The son of North Carolina state Senate leader Phil Berger says he wants to "shake things up" like his father and other Republicans have done in Raleigh if he gets elected to Congress next year.

Phil Berger Jr. began a two-day tour of the 6th Congressional District on Wednesday while formally announcing his bid for the GOP nomination in May. He wants to succeed retiring GOP U.S. Rep. Howard Coble. At least three other Republicans are in the race.

The younger Berger is the district attorney in Rockingham County, where he kicked off the tour. He later spoke in a restaurant near the Alamance County courthouse.

Phil Berger Jr. says he would fight what he called "liberal overreach in Washington" and work to repeal the president's health care overhaul law.
