Seminole Middle School students hospitalized after taking pills

SEMINOLE, FL (WFLA) -

Pinellas County school officials say five Seminole Middle School students were hospitalized after taking prescription pills on campus.

Investigators say a female 8th grade student brought the medications from home and passed them out to several students.  Deputies say the pills were a drug called hydroxyzine, which is an antihistamine.

Deputies were called after a student reported not feeling well.  The Sheriff's Office says five students were taken to All Children's Hospital as a precaution.

School officials say the student who brought the pills did not have approval to bring the medication to school.

Dr. Alfred Aleguas with the Florida Poison Information Center in Tampa, said this situation could have been much worse.

"Really the big danger was that they really didn't know what they were taking. And they just happened to get hydroxyzine," he said.

Dr. Aleguas offers a bit of advice to parents.

"Locking your medications up and keeping them out of the reach of people that are intentionally searching for drugs, and then also keeping them out the reach of young children, which is our biggest customer," said Dr. Aleguas.

The student who gave out the pills is facing two charges: dispensing medication without a license, which is a felony, and possession of a prescription medication without a prescription (misdemeanor).

The school is reviewing the incident to understand exactly what happened, and is working with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office as they investigate the incident.
