Close elk encounter captured on video

Posted: Updated:
A photographer had a close encounter with a bull elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and another man captured it on camera, WBIR reported.

According to the WBIR story, James York was in a safe designated area of the Cataloochee Trail shooting pictures when the elk, that York estimated to be about 500 pounds, walked up to him and head-butted him. York sat still.

"He just kind of looked up at me," York told WBIR. "I just paused and waited for him to move on, but he decided to take more interest in me."

Vince Camiolo, another photographer, captured the encounter on camera and uploaded it on YouTube. The video has been viewed over 290,000 times.

Park rangers told WBIR, York did everything right - he didn't approach the mammal, didn't interact with it. They said he should have slowly walked away when the elk came up to him.

York said he didn't know what to do.
