Fayetteville police warn of PWC phone scam

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The Fayetteville Police Department is notifying residents and businesses to beware of fraudulent phone calls from someone representing the Public Works Commission.

Police said the caller will say they are representing the PWC and that payment is due immediately or services will be shut off. The caller asks for payment my credit card or bank information over the telephone to avoid service disconnection.

None of the PWC customers connected had delinquent accounts at the time, police said.

Fayetteville police said if a similar call is received, please feel free to contact the Public Works Commission and inquire about the status of your account at (910) 483-1382.

PWC representatives also would like to remind residents that they do not call customers to collect payment or attempt to collect payments in person.  It is also important to remember that PWC does have an optional automated telephone call that reminds a customer if payment has not been received, but it does not attempt to collect the payment over the telephone.
