POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Polk deputies say a car crash claimed the life of a Winter Haven teacher.

Around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, investigators say a truck ran a red light at the intersection of US Highway 92 and US Highway 17.  Deputies say the truck hit a Toyota Camry driven by Shirelle Baldwin, 44, of Lakeland.  A report states Baldwin had entered the intersection on a green light to make a left turn.

Baldwin was declared dead at the scene.  Her passenger, Taniea Baldwin, 18, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Shirelle and Taniea Baldwin are not related.  Taniea is a student at New Beginnings High School in Winter Haven, where Baldwin was a teacher.

The truck driver was also taken to the hospital. Deputies say charges are pending against him.  Stay with wfla.com for any updates.
