Florida's longest-serving crossing guard retires

Posted: Updated:
The Sarasota Police department bid a fond farewell Thursday to its longest-serving crossing guard.

Barbara Stallings retired after 41 years on the job.  That makes her not only the longest-serving crossing guard in the Bay area, but in the state of Florida.

Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino presented Stallings with a plaque honoring her long and dedicated service.

Mrs. Stallings' family was also in attendance at the ceremony.  She is mother of seven children, and began working again when her youngest child entered kindergarten.
Mrs. Stallings started working with the Sarasota Police Department on January 19, 1972.  Her first post as a crossing guard was Bahia Vista Street and Shade Avenue.

“This type of accomplishment is one many people only dream about.  Barbara always said she could write a book about all the things that happened during her time with the Sarasota Police Department.  We’ll miss having her protect and serve our kids and parents on their way to school, but we’re excited for her next chapter,” said Nicki Whitehead, Crossing Guard Coordinator, Sarasota Police Department.
