Manatee Sheriff: man tried to grab girl near bus stop

Posted: Updated:
BRADENTON, FL (WFLA) -

Manatee County deputies are looking for a mysterious man they say tried to grab an 11-year-old girl on her way to school on Wednesday.

Deputies say at around 7:25 Wednesday morning, the girl was walking to her school bus along 5th Street East, when an older man in a van pulled over, and started talking to her.

"She says the person started asking her questions," said Manatee County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Dave Bristow.

"She was able to break free, she took off, ended up getting on the bus, going to school, and then telling someone about it later in the morning," Bristow said.

The girl described the suspect as an older man with gray hair. He was wearing a blue and white-striped shirt and black pants.

He was driving a white van with multiple windows.

"[Wednesday] we had some pretty strong leads, but so far no arrests," said Bristow.

It's too early to tell what kind of charges the man could face, but investigators say the story is still troubling.

"Look. If someone pulls off the road, starts talking to an 11 year old, tries to grab her, there's something not right there, and that's what we're going on here," said Bristow.

Deputies are hoping somebody saw something.  They are checking to see if there are any surveillance cameras that may have captured the incident.

If you have any information on this case, call the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
