Property manager Jan McCabe usually likes getting responses to her "for rent" ads on Craig's List. But lately, all the callers think the Hyde Park apartment she's trying to rent is going for hundreds of dollars less than it actually is.

"It's very upsetting," McCabe said.

It turns out, a con artist copied McCabe's ad word for word, but instead of the monthly rent of $1,575, it lists $800 - a steal for Hyde Park. McCabe says she's heard from 10 renters who fell for the scam but then figured it out and found her. They all say a man named David tells them to fill out an application and then send him a $600 deposit.

"It's really heartbreaking because these people feel very vulnerable, especially when they fill out the application with their personal information," McCabe said.

McCabe says she emailed Craigslist about the scam but the ad is still there, and the phone calls from victims keep coming, so she called 8 On Your Side, and we did some digging.

The man who called himself David lists his email online. A search of his address turns up two other ads for housing on Craigslist-- both in other parts of the country.  Both of them have been flagged for removal.
