TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Tampa Police have created an easy way for you to contact them by using a new mobile app that you can download to your smart phone.

The free Tampa Police app has been around for about one month. The different sections let you report a crime, leave a tip, and even contact school resource officers.

"We really get everything on there," said Tampa Police Spokesperson Andrea Davis. "People report a lot of neighborhood issues like illegally parked cars. People are sending in drug complaints like when they think drug activity is going on at a house."

Davis says they get about three messages a day from the app. There's even a section where you can look at unsolved cases. Some unsolved cases even feature surveillance video, like an armed robbery at a Papa John's Pizza about one week ago.

"If they know that person or they know someone who knows that person the word gets out there and we can potentially solve a crime," Davis said.

Tampa resident Noel Mitchell has never used the app, but likes the idea.

"A lot of times people see something happen but they don't have the opportunity to report it or they don't feel comfortable," Mitchell said.

Davis says one of the features that helps police the most is the "My Inventory" tab. Users can store pictures and serial numbers for valuables like laptops. That way, if the item gets stolen, police can track it down easier.

"We're in a day and age where people feel more comfortable doing things over their phone instead of coming in. If this is the way they prefer then we're glad to have it."

Davis says they eventually plan to improve the app.
