Hampton High School’s Michaela Matheson, a three time TSSAA Girl’s Golf State Tournament qualifier,  has signed a letter of intent to attend Milligan College and play golf for the Buffaloes.  Milligan Head Coach Tony Wallingford made the announcement.

Matheson’s golf accomplishments are numerous, and include three MVP awards for the Three Rivers Conference (Co-MVP in 2013), three times all district including medalist in 2011, three times all region, and three trips to the TSSAA Girl’s State Championship where she finished 37th, 32nd, and 29th.   This past season, Matheson twice had impressive rounds of 1 over par 73 in the district and regional tournaments.  She was also active in PGA Junior Series events throughout the region and had a 3rd place finish at the Country Club of Bristol and a 2nd place finish at Elizabethton Golf Club in 2013.  Matheson will join a Milligan team currently ranked in the top 25 nationally and sitting atop the AAC standings.

Coach Wallingford expressed his excitement in Matheson joining the Lady Buffaloes saying, “I have been pestering Michaela since the beginning of her 9th grade year to come and play for us at Milligan.  I will never forget the time she looked at me like I was crazy when I jokingly jested with her during her sophomore year that I wanted her to quit high school and play for us right away.” Wallingford also added, “It is has been fun to watch her game develop over the past few years and I am really excited about her potential.  She is very dedicated, a hard worker, and always at the golf course practicing and playing. Michaela is a wonderful young lady and I am confident she will have a great career at Milligan.”

Matheson, an outstanding student, plans a  major in  pre-pharmacy at Milligan.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as the Co-President of the Hampton High School student council.  She was selected for the Carter County Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Program in 2012-13.  Matheson has logged over 700 hours of community service and has participated in service trips to Houston, Texas and Staten Island, N.Y.
