Stores open early Thanksgiving to lure in shoppers

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Stores are opening earlier this year over the Thanksgiving holiday, and you can see why when you look at the numbers.

Last year, Thanksgiving sales equaled $810 million. That was up 55 percent from the year before.

Retailers say they are just doing what shoppers want - and the holiday revenue is a huge chunk of their annual income.

"I am a family person and I believe the holidays should be a time for family and worshiping together and fellowship together," said Karri O'Neal. "I would like to see less commercialism. I appreciate what they're trying to do."

But another, Patrick Romano, said, "Honest, I think the more flexibility you can have to do some early shopping, the better. I think it's a good move.

Many stores will be open Thanksgiving.  You can find a list of times the major stores in the area will be open here.
