We all built sand castles as kids, so why stop? There are a few people who make a living doing that and we have two of them joining us today. Meredith Corson of Sanding Ovations Professional Sand Sculptors is here to tell us about the 5th "Sanding Ovations Masters Cup Sand Sculpture Competition" happening on Treasure Island November 20th -24th. Hello Meredith!
All it takes is a pile of sand, some buckets of water, and lots of imagination to build a masterpiece - at least for ten master sculptors who return to Treasure Island for the 5th annual Sanding Ovations Masters Cup Sand Sculpture Competition and Music Festival November 20-24, 2013. The top four sculptures and a "people's choice" sculpture will be awarded over $12,000 cash prizes. The masterful exhibition of sand sculpting talent at the world-class level is the big appeal, supplemented by the giant sponsor sculpture created by Treasure Island's own The beach food court, an arts and crafts marketplace and three days of live music make Sanding Ovations a must-see event while visiting Treasure Island. When sculpting is done for the day and the sun sets, the stage lights go up as Sanding Ovations welcomes the hottest band in the bay, the Black Honkeys to the Bud Light Lime-a-Rita Stage at 8pm Friday. Opening for the Honkeys are the breakout band of the year, the ukulele funk of Applebutter Express, playing at 6pm. Saturday, the biggest day of the event, includes fireworks on the beach at 10pm, the Masters Cup awards presentation at 7pm and an all-out party starting at 3pm with Treasure Island's bluegrass rockers Cornfused. The awesome Rocket Man Show, starring Rus Anderson as Elton John, is back by popular demand this year. "Elton" plays Saturday night at 8pm. Kick back Sunday beginning at noon with WMNF's Pete Gallagher and the Florida Folk Show, followed by the eclectic funk of rising stars Come Back Alice at 2:30, and wrap up Sunday with rockin' blues from the always-great Sarasota Slim at 4pm. Sanding Ovations Week kicks off with a party for the sculptors at the Crystal Sands Ballroom at the Bilmar Beach Resort, 10650 Gulf Boulevard in Treasure Island, on Wednesday, November 20th at 7pm. $5 gets you a tremendous spread of tasty hors d' oeuvres from Sloppy Joe's Restaurant, and a great assortment beers from Great Bay Distributors. Tickets are available at the door. Sanding Ovations is a City of Treasure Island Parks & Recreation Department event, sponsored in part by Bud Light Lime-a-Rita, and is free and open to the public. $15 beach parking or $10 TI Park parking available at 104th Avenue & Gulf Boulevard.
