Trial begins Tuesday for accused Tampa cop killer

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Opening statements are set to begin Tuesday morning in the trial of Dontae Morris. He is accused of killing Tampa Police officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis during a traffic stop in June 2010.

Jury selection took place last week in Orlando because of the high level of pretrial publicity in Tampa. Testimony will take place at the Hillsborough County Courthouse. Jurors will be sequestered in Tampa for the length of the trial.

Morris has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first degree murder.

Prosecutors plan to show jurors dash camera video, which Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor says shows Morris shoot Curtis and Kocab.

"It's the most horrific thing that I have ever seen not only in my law enforcement career, but in my life," said Castor.  "But the value of that in this trial is very significant."

Morris has already been convicted in an unrelated murder. He is awaiting trial in two other murder cases. If jurors find him guilty in this case, he could face the death penalty.
