Brandon football teams, cheer squad suspended over video

Posted: Updated:
RIVERVIEW, FL -

Excited over two undefeated teams representing the Brandon Bears, a group of 7 junior varsity cheerleaders celebrated at a home barbeque. But a seemingly innocent Facebook video landed them in trouble.

League officials banned the cheerleaders from the upcoming cheer-off and the 2 football teams from the TCYFCC Superbowl on November 23.

A statement from the League President says the girls were "conducting a practice at a home of a coach" saying they were getting a "competitive advantage."  The penalty: "removal of the entire organization from post season play."

The Brandon Bears are devastated.

"We've been practicing for like 6 months, more. We've been all working hard. And they just take it away right then," said Brandon Bears J.V. player Reagan Jorgenson.

"At the barbeque the girls want to show their parents what they can do. It's fun. Cheering is fun. Why else do you sign up for cheer?" said cheerleader Katelynn Gelman.

With only 7 of the 35 cheer squad members doing the living room routine, many think league officials are overreacting.

"Definitely blind-sided us. We were preparing our team. We just celebrated a victory on Saturday. And that victory was going to allow us to play in the Superbowl," said Laurence Stubbs, the Brandon Bears Midget Coach.

The trophy room for the Brandon Bears cheerleaders is loaded with awards.

"I hope that they change their mind and let us back in so we can win one more time for our last year," said cheerleader Donielle Smith.
