Eastern Carolina communities observe Veterans Day

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - It's Veterans Day across the country. Communities are taking time to remember those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and those still fighting for it today.

President Obama laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns Monday morning for Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery.

A very special guest was on-hand for the ceremony. 107-year-old Richard Overton is believed to be the oldest living American World War II veteran.

During the ceremony, President Obama spoke a few words about Overton's service. Earlier in the day, Overton had breakfast with the president and vice president.

The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band made a special appearance for Greenville's annual Veterans Day parade.

Veterans, children and their families lined the streets of uptown Greenville to get a glimpse of it all.

The patriotism touched the hearts of many this morning.

Some of them, like the Girls Scouts from Coastal Pines Council went the extra mile to recognize veterans for their service, handing them special cards that say thank you.

The day's message was pretty simple, freedom is never really free.
Although some might not think about it on a daily basis, there’s a lot to thanks veterans for.
In Onslow County, Chapter 16 of the Disabled American Veterans Association held its annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Organizers laid a commemorative wreath for veterans, then held a moment of silence in honor of their courage and loyalty.

Organizers say it's important to pay tribute because veterans protect the freedoms we enjoy as democracy.

Camp Lejeune Marines say veterans are an inspiration.

"It's an honor because I get to follow their footsteps. I get to show them that I can do the same thing and I want to live up to their expectations. I'm very proud to one day be able to say that I'm a veteran too," said Isaiah Holloman, USMC, Private 1st Class.

There are more than 20 million veterans in the United States.
