Family loses home and two dogs in house fire

Posted: Updated:
A family loses its home and two dogs in a fire Sunday morning.

Firefighters from three different departments got the call about a two-story structure fire on Rolling Hills Road in Kinston. Herman Grajn lives near the home and says he saw seven to eight fire trucks rushing by his home.

"My wife and I saw a lot of smoke up there,  and when  we saw a lot of smoke we thought it was my son's house, so we went back up there to see about it," said Grajn.

Although it wasn't Grajn's son, a family was home at the time and was able to get out of the home unharmed.

"The daughter was upstairs in her bedroom and something woke her up. Sensed smoke, thought something was on fire smelled something heard something, I don't know. I think she ran down and was telling everybody what was going on," said Assistant Fire Chief Deep Run Volunteer Fire Department, John Whitfield.

Fire officials say they believe the fire started inside a dog house outside the home and spread to the house.

The home is total loss.

A firefighter tells 9 On Your Side they were able to retrieved the bodies of the two dogs to give to the families.
