Police: Former Durham police officer stabbed wife to death

DURHAM, N.C. -

A former Durham police officer has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of his wife. 

Police said officers responded to a call at 2917 Cedarwood Drive around 6:15 p.m. Friday and found the body of Maxine Burns inside the house.

Maxine Burns, 50, had been stabbed to death, according to investigators.

Her husband, 51-year-old Timothy W. Burns, was taken to the hospital Friday following the incident, police said. He remains hospitalized.

Investigators have issued a warrant charging Timothy Burns with the murder of his wife.

Durham Police confirmed that Timothy Burns is a former officer. He left the department in the 1990s.
