Battleship North Carolina gets $1 million donation

Posted: Updated:
WILMINGTON, N.C. -

Duke Energy Foundation has given $1 million to repair the hull of the Battleship North Carolina, the memorial that's dedicated to North Carolinians of all services killed in World War II.

The Department of the Navy said in 2009 that the USS North Carolina Battleship Commission needed to develop a repair plan or plan for the eventual disposal of the ship.  A statement says the donation from Duke Energy Foundation is part of the effort to repair the ship and expand the battleship complex.

The state of North Carolina bought the ship from the Navy for $330,000, and it was dedicated in 1962 as a memorial for the more than 10,000 North Carolinians who served and died during WWII.  It's moored in Wilmington.
