Hillsborough deputies arrested a 9-year-old Ippolito Elementary School student after a county school bus driver saw him putting a gun into his pant pocket, according to the HCSO report.

The bus driver, Debra Dryden was en route to the school in Riverview with students on board, when she heard one of the students makes "unusual" comments, deputies said.

The bus driver looked closer and noticed the student putting a small gun into his pocket.

Dryden said "my first response was oh darn... I didn't see what I just saw."

She immediately notified the school's principal who called HCSO deputies.

HCSO deputies were waiting for the bus when it arrived at the school.

Dryden added, ""the officers confirmed that the gun was real and that it was not a toy and it was a shock to me and at that point it was like wow."

They searched the student after the rest of the children were safely taken off the bus.

Deputies said they found a .22 loaded Derringer in the boy's pocket. They arrested the boy and took him to the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center.  He is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Deputies said they spoke to the boy's parents who said he had taken the gun without their knowledge.

Larry McKinnon added, "they were unaware that he had taken the gun to school, but they are unsure how he got a hold of it so that part is still not clear investigators are still looking into that."

Deputies said nobody else was charged. They continue to investigate.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
