Life of Julius Chambers to be marked at alma mater

DURHAM, N.C. -

N.C. Central University is scheduled to celebrate the life of alumnus and civil rights attorney Julius Chambers.

The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. at B.N. Duke Auditorium on the N.C. Central campus.

Among those expected to take part in the commemoration are U.S. Reps. G.K. Butterfield and David Price, and former UNC Board of Governors member Dudley Flood.

Chambers, whose work was in the forefront of the civil rights movement in North Carolina, died on Aug. 2 after months of declining health.

Chambers and his partners won cases that shaped civil rights law, including Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. The 1971 case mandated crosstown busing and highlighted the power of federal courts to intervene when local public school systems hedged en route to full integration.
