USAA to create 1200 new jobs in Hillsborough County

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The United Services Automobile Association says it's expanding in Tampa Bay, adding up to 1,215 new jobs and making $164.3 million in capital investments. City leaders say this is the largest jobs announcement in years.

USAA already has a big presence in Tampa with 1,800 jobs. But now, the insurance, banking and investment company, which provides services for military families, says it's chosen Tampa over other cities to create an even larger presence. Gov. Rick Scott made the announcement and Rick Homans, of the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation, says he's been been working on this deal for 14 months.

"We pulled out all the stops with our business leaders, our political leaders," said Rick Homans, of the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. "We showcased our work force here. The good thing about this company is they have a lot of experience here."

USSA now has an office in New Tampa, with 600 more employees scattered across the state. Homans says Tampa was chosen because the area has proven it has a qualified work force.

This announcement comes on the heels of two other recent job announcements.

Online retailer Amazon announced it will build a distribution center in Ruskin, adding about 2,000 jobs. Drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb, pledged to add 579 jobs.

As part of this expansion, USAA will build a new 420,000 square-foot building at the Crosstown Center in Brandon by 2015.  It will be the largest office project in Hillsborough County since 2001.
