NCDOT's 'Fortify' project will rebuild crumbling roads

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Right now the 30-year-old pavement on the south side of the beltline is cracking and crumbling.

That's why the North Carolina DOT started its massive "Fortify" project that's going to rebuild the 11.5-mile stretch of 40 and 440.

"This is a safety concern. What we've got is a chemical reaction happening underneath the pavement," explained N.C. DOT's Communication's Director Mike Charbonneau.

Charbonneau said a chemical that was used to build the original roads 30 years ago is causing the pavement to deteriorate.

"We've gotten to the point that, for safety's sake, we have to get in and tear out that entire 11.5-mile stretch of road and rebuild the whole road so that it remains safe for drivers."

Last week, crews extracted core samples to figure out how far down the pavement goes and how deep they'll have to drill.

The massive project will take 3 years to complete. At the DOT's operations center, Charbonneau explained the DOT is bringing more personnel to monitor the roads during the project.

Expect lane closures Monday through Wednesday starting at nine at night until five in the morning.
