ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) -

The Elizabethton Betsy Band brought back the state championship trophy for the second year in a row Sunday.

Police escorted the champs back home from the competition in Nashville.

A crowd of fans gathered at the high school to welcome them home.

"We knew it was going to be a very close competition and so to be honest no we weren't really expecting it but we were very pleased when it happened," Band director Perry Elliott said.

"Oh it was huge. I was really thankful that I was able to win it my senior year and for my senior class, we worked really hard and I think it was well deserved," senior band member Kaleb Pierce said.

Pierce said  he and his band mates were surprised when the bus turned the corner to see all the people from the community who came out to support them.

The Betsy Band has won three state championships in the last four years.
