LARGO, FL (WFLA) -

Authorities in Pinellas County have released the name of an armed suspect who was shot by a deputy Friday night in the parking lot of a Largo motel.

Anthony Antonio Newkirk is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. Once he is medically cleared he will be transported to the Pinellas County Jail.

Newkirk, 33, is facing one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, one count of cocaine possession and one count of operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

According to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office report the incident that led to the suspect being shot began just after 8:30 p.m. Friday night at the Suburban Lodge Motel in the 6500 block of Ulmerton Rd. Investigators say Deputy Bill Hartigan with the department’s Suburban Community Policing Unit, received information that Newkirk was heading to the motel to conduct an illegal firearms sale.

Deputy Hartigan, with assistance from other members of the Sheriff’s Office, set up surveillance around the motel. When the suspect arrived he backed his vehicle into a parking space at the rear of the complex.

Hartigan, who has been with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office since April 2007, approached Newkirk and ordered him to exit his vehicle. The suspect refused the deputy’s instructions and eventually began to drive his vehicle forward.

The report states the suspect reached into his waistband as if to retrieve a weapon. Fearing for his safety Deputy Hartigan shot the man several times. An investigation showed the suspect was in possession of several firearms at the time of the shooting.

Newkirk has an extensive arrest record in Pinellas County that goes back more than a decade. He has served two stints in the state prison system for a variety of crimes including drug possession, grand theft auto and aggravated assault.

Deputy Hartigan has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
