TALLAHASSEE, FL (WFLA) -

Former Florida Republican governor turned Democrat Charlie Crist has filed paperwork to run for his old job with his new party.

The state Division of Elections posted the filing on its website Friday. Crist couldn't be immediately reached for comment, but has an announcement scheduled for Monday morning in St. Petersburg.

According to a Facebook posting the 57-year-old Crist will make it official at 9:30 a.m. at a public rally at Albert Whitted Park, 480 Bayshore Dr. Southeast in St. Petersburg. Crist advises supporters to arrive early and carpool if possible.

Crist has been building up to an announcement for months, talking to Democratic groups and campaigning with Democratic candidates. That includes President Barack Obama last year.

He has already set up a website, and his speeches recently have criticized Republican Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott's political committee has already bought anti-Crist ads to begin airing the day of the announcement and the race is expected to be one of the most expensive, brutal governor's races in the county next year.

Crist served as the 44th Governor of the Sunshine State for just one term from 2007 until 2011. He began his political career serving in the Florida Senate from 1993 until 1999. He was Florida’s Education Commissioner from 2001 to 2003 and was the state’s Attorney General from 2003 until he was elected Governor.

He declined to seek a second term as Governor when in 2009 he announced he would run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Mel Martinez. For the past two years Crist has worked for the personal injury law firm of Morgan and Morgan.
