Elderly Pinellas man robbed and tied up with duct tape

Posted: Updated:
GULFPORT, FL (WFLA) -

Gulfport Police Officers investigated a robbery where an elderly man was robbed and tied up with duct tape on the 6000 block of Gulfport Boulevard on Friday night.

Detectives say the man was followed into his home by the suspect who officers have identified as 24-year-old Nathan Rewerts of Gulfport.

Officials say Rewerts tied the man up with duct tape and then took his wallet and car keys and left in the victim's 2013 Chevrolet Camaro.

Investigators say the man was able to chew through the duct tape after several hours and called 911.

Police say the car was equipped with On-Star and they were able to find the car. Detectives say Rewerts was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol and Pasco County Sheriff's Deputies near the Flying J truck stop off Interstate 275 and State Road 52 in Pasco County.

Officials say Rewerts was transported to the Pasco County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to Pinellas County.

Detectives say Rewerts and the victim know each other. Officials have not released the name of the victim and say he was not injured.
