RALEIGH, N.C. -

A record number of people took part in Sunday's City of Oaks Marathon.

More than 5,500 runners registered for the day's events, which set off and finished on Hillsborough Street near N.C. State University's Bell Tower Sunday morning.

A total of 4,315 completed the events -- 735 individual runners finished the 26.2-mile marathon, 100 teams completed the marathon relay, 2,146 completed the 13.1-mile half marathon and 1,034 finished the 10K.

First-time City Oaks participant 28-year-old Bryan Morseman, of Addison, N.Y., won the marathon, finishing the race in a time of 2:27:29 and earning a $1,300 award.

"Running on the [Greenway] trail was nice," Morseman said after his race, "and it was great to come back off the trail and have the crowd cheering you on. It helps push you."

Raleigh's Kimberlie Meeker, 33, finished the women's 26.2-mile contest in a time of 2:50:08 and earned the $1,300 award.

Proceeds from the Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon, Rex Healthcare Half Marathon, and News & Observer Old Reliable 10K benefit local chapters of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Rex Healthcare Foundation, and the YMCA "We Build People" program.
