Kids bring in Halloween in non-traditional ways

Posted: Updated:
As thousands of kids trick or treat on Halloween, some kids in eastern North Carolina bring in the holiday at church.

Greenville Christian Academy marked the holiday with a fall festival. School administrators say this is an annual event that happened to fall on Halloween this year, a coincidence that brought out the costumes.

The festival featured a hay ride, carnival games, food, a silent auction, and music.

While several churches hold festivals or “hallelujah nights” others like Covenant Church, head to the ice skating rink. Kids and their parents spent two hours at Blades on Ice. Kids and their parents dressed up in costumes or as themselves and put their ice skating moves to the test.

"It's real fun and I like it better than going out trick or treating, or doing other stuff like that," said 10-year-old Jacob Dienes.

"We redeem the holiday.  We don't do scary costumes here. We just let everyone come out and have a good time. For most kids Halloween is nothing more than getting some candy and we're just providing a really safe way for them get to do that," said Children’s Ministry Director Melissa Norris.
