TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Massive flames lit up the early morning dark sky in Lake Egypt. Neighbors gathered on the street as they watched the home burn.

"Someone was driving down the street blowing the horn around 6 this morning," Cindy Culver said. "I didn't know why so I came outside looked over and saw the flames coming out."

Culver lives two houses down from the home. She woke her family up and told everyone to go outside, worried the flames might spread.

"They were so tall," Culver said. "They were about as tall as the trees. I saw embers flying and it made me nervous."

It took firefighters about one hour to put out the flames, much longer to control the smoke, at 3218 Alene St. across from Sligh Avenue West. According to HCFR, 19 units responded to the fire.

Fire officials said a 78-year-old woman lived in the 3500 square feet house that is considered a total loss after the fire. The woman was not home when the fire started.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office assisted the fire crews with traffic. They closed Sligh Avenue in both directions from West Minnehaha to West Lambright streets. Deputies recommend to use North Glenn Avenue as alternate.

Hillsborough County school district officials said the near-by Egypt Lake Elementary School is open.

We still don't know what caused the fire.
