New Frank LLoyd Wright home unveiled in Lakeland

Posted: Updated:
LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

The very first Frank Lloyd Wright design to be constructed for an original client on an original site since 1966 is finally ready for its public debut in Lakeland.

Florida Southern College, which is home to the largest single collection of Wright architecture in the world, can now boast a new building called the Usonian House.

Wright designed the Usonian House in 1939 to be constructed as a home for faculty members. The blueprints, along with several other Wright designs, sat un-constructed for decades until FSC received grant money to make construction a reality.

"We thought it would be really wonderful to build this smaller design. It was the smallest of the structures that we uncovered for the campus," explained FSC President Dr. Anne Kerr.

The Usonian House will serve as a sort of Frank Lloyd Wright museum. It's constructed next to a brand new Craftsman style house that will be a welcome center and gift shop for visiting tourists.

"We want you to come and enjoy the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright," said Kerr.

Florida Southern College will unveil the new Usonian house to the public Friday November 1, 2013.

The Usonian House by the numbers:

-Original design date: 1939

-Square footage: 1700

-Construction materials: concrete slab; "textile block" walls; steel and wood-framed roof; cypress-board walls and ceiling

-Number of blocks: 1978 with 47 shapes

-Number of glass inserts: 5,000 with 8 different colors

-Supervising architect: M. Jeff Baker of Mesick, Cohen, Wilson, Baker Architects
