Safety expert gives insight into carnival rides

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A safety consultant with 20 years of experience in carnival rides said most ride operators don't even know how to tamper with a safety system.

"The end user, such as the ride operator, has to comply with what's in that manual and in 20 years, I've never seen someone state in their manual how to bypass any type of safety system," said Ken Martin of Richmond, Va.

On Saturday night, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison announced Timothy Dwayne Tutterrow of Georgia was being charged with three criminal counts of assault with a deadly weapon after five people were injured Oct. 24 on a fair ride that he was operating. He is accused of intentionally tampering with the safety devices on the ride.

Tutterrow appeared in a Wake County courtroom Monday.

Martin said that based on his experience, more people could face charges.

"I have seen ride owners, I have seen ride operators, I've seen ride supervisors. I've seen ride inspectors charged with crimes," Martin said.
