A Tampa Airport police officer is on administrative leave after officials say he fired his gun at a sex offender who lunged at him in an airport parking garage.
According to TIA officials, at 4:30 p.m., a Tampa Airport police officer approached a man who said he was watching planes from the 8th floor of the short-term parking garage.
A background check revealed that the person was a sex offender. His probation officer indicated Pinellas County officials were preparing to issue a warrant for his arrest. The probation officer also reported that a shotgun was missing from the home of the man’s parents, with whom he lived.
TIA officials say at 5 p.m. the officer found the man on the 4th floor of the long-term parking garage, sitting in his car with a gun in his mouth. The man got out of his car, and lunged at the officer. The man then turned and jumped from the fourth floor of the garage, according to TIA officials. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hillsborough County medical examiner says the man sustained bullet wounds.
The officer involved is on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
