Toll lanes considered to ease Tampa traffic congestion

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Like many drivers, Juan Diaz has a problem with Tampa traffic.

"You really don't want to be on [Interstate] 275 at rush hour. You don't want to go south and you don't want to go north, you don't even want to go to I-4, it's terrible," said Diaz.

There is major road construction going on along Interstate 275 through downtown Tampa.

The Florida Department of Transportation says that road project will be complete in 2016.

Kris Carson with F.D.O.T. Says they are considering a plan beyond that to help with the traffic congestion issue.
The plan involves adding toll lanes to existing lanes of traffic.  Carson says it's working in other major cities like Miami

"When you give people an option, they hop over there, they're actually helping the general use lane as well go faster. So, it's a win, win for everybody," said Carson.

The toll lanes could also be added to Interstate 275 going north to Bearss.  Toll lanes are also being considered for Interstate 4 from 50th Street to the Polk Parkway.

"We want to help move goods and our motorists and business through the State of Florida, so it's better economics, give people more reliable time, less congestion," said Carson.

Thadius Davis, a gas station operator, is concerned about the details of the plan.  He worries toll lanes could impact his business

"If they're in that center lane, that's costing us a lot of money," said Davis.

Kris Carson says the plan is in the project development and environment study phase, and that may take up to two years before a plan is presented.
