Construction on new Onslow County Center for Public Safety progressing

Posted: Updated:
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The City of Jacksonville is in the midst of a $30 million project.

Construction of the new Center for Public Safety began over the summer. The police and fire headquarters is nearly 60-years-old. Jacksonville's Public Safety Director and Chief of Police, Michael Yaniero, said the current building is simply outdated. It was originally built as city hall and was never intended to house a police or fire department.

“The other thing is evidence,” said Michael Yaniero, Jacksonville Police Chief. “Evidence is stored in seven different locations within this building. It was never designed as a police department so secure evidence locations weren't provided.”

The new center provides enough room for future growth of both departments and city officials expect construction to wrap-up next fall.
