NC State Fair ride operator denied bond

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - A state fair ride operator, facing criminal charges after several people were injured last week, went before a judge Monday.

46-year-old Timothy Tutterow faces three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury.

Three people remain hospitalized, after a ride called The Vortex started up last Thursday as people were getting off it.

The ride dropped riders from heights eyewitnesses estimated at up to 30 feet.
The sheriff says Tutterow was the ride operator and intentionally tampered with safety devices on it.

"It makes me mad to think that anybody would put people's safety in danger like they have and I'm not mad, I'm furious,” said N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.

"For somebody to intentionally do something like this, we want to make sure we take care of business and I think we have and we still have some work to do," said Donnie Harrison, Wake County Sheriff.

Tutterow's attorney says he's "absolutely devastated" about what happened. He's in jail on a $225,000 bond.
Records show he was previously arrested on felony drug charges in Kentucky and Georgia, including a 2002 conviction for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
