Dozens of Bay area residents took part Saturday in Operation Medicine Cabinet disposing of unwanted prescription drugs at several drop-off locations in Hillsborough and other counties.
The initiative is part of the Drug Enforcement Agency's National Take-Back Day.
Law enforcement agencies across the state incorporate the event into their efforts to crack down on illegal pill mills and prevent prescription drug abuse. Taking part in Saturday's Operation Medicine Cabinet were deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and officers with the DEA and Tampa Police Departments.
They were assisted by representatives with the Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance.
The four-hour operation provided a chance for citizens to rid themselves of expired, unwanted or unused medications with no questions asked. There were three drop-off points in Hillsborough County – two in Tampa one in Valrico.
Similar operations also took place in Pinellas, Manatee, Polk and Sarasota counties.
