A Palmetto Police officer was injured early Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 41 in Manatee County.
The incident shut down the northbound lanes of the roadway for more than two hours.
According to a Palmetto Police Department report the collision occurred at approximately 5:40 a.m. near the intersection of 20th St. West. After colliding with the other car, the police cruiser and the other vehicle careened into a nearby home.
"The officer was transporting a prisoner to the Manatee County Jail when the crash occurred," said Palmetto PD Sgt. Scott Tyler. "He suffered a bump on the head but is going to be OK. The prisoner was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of some minor injuries; he's since been released into the jail."
Nobody inside the residence was hurt. The home was badly damaged and the local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting them in locating temporary accommodations until the structure is repaired.
The occupants of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash; so far no charges have been filed.
