Veteran shot by police at Bay Pines VA Medical Center

Posted: Updated:

68-year-old veteran, Vincent L. Young was shot and killed by police in the emergency room at Bay Pines VA Medical Center in St. Petersburg on Friday just after 5:00 p.m.

Bay Pines VA Police say he walked into the ER claiming he had a bomb.

FBI agents say when VA Police approached Young he lunged at an officer with a knife, forcing police to shoot him.
Young was treated for his injuries in the ER but later died.

An FBI spokesperson told media Friday night that the man had a suspicious device with PVC pipe in a backpack. Officials have determined that it was not an explosive.

The ER was evacuated because of the bomb threat and remains closed on Friday night as the FBI continues their investigation into the shooting.
The following statement was released on Saturday by the FBI's Public Affairs Officer.

"The victim involved in the shooting incident at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center on Friday, October 25, 2013, was identified as Vincent L. Young, 68, 9261 48th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, Florida. The next of kin notification was completed today."
