Hillsborough deputies injured in I-75 crash, lanes reopened

Posted: Updated:
Two Hillsborough County deputies were rushed from the scene of a crash on I-75 south.

The accident happened around 8:00 a.m., just north of Sun City.

Officials said the two deputies had stopped a motorcyclist and were struck by another motorcyclist while standing on the grass shoulder.

The deputies were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Southbound traffic was closed for several hours. Officials reopened the Highway at 11:00 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle police stopped initially says the whole incident happened in a matter of moments.

"I saw a bike coming towards my way, jumped up, out of the way," he said.

He asked not be identified.

For the Sheriff's Office the accident could've been much worse.

"We've got three people in the hospital that appear, all are going to be able to fully recover and we're not planning any funerals right now," said Larry McKinnon, Hillsborough County Sheriff public information officer.
