DURHAM, N.C. -

A Durham police officer helped deliver a baby on the side of Interstate 85 Wednesday morning.

Traffic Services Officer Gabriel Munter was working on an accident report near the Club Boulevard exit on I-85 around 9 a.m. when a car pulled up behind his vehicle, police said.

A man frantically ran up to Munter and said his wife was giving birth in their car. Munter retrieved a pair of gloves from his trunk and ran to the car, Durham police said.

"The baby was coming out. I scooped up the baby and took the cord from around her neck. I bundled the baby in towels and put her on the mother's chest. I told them they had a baby girl," Munter said.

Soon after, a second officer, K-9 Officer J.J. McDonough with the Highway Interdiction Unit, arrived to assist Munter.

"The mother did all the work. I just tidied everything up. I made sure the baby was breathing, had an airway and was getting good color," said Munter, who is the father of one and a former EMT.

Police said paramedics arrived on the scene and checked out the mother and baby, who were both doing well.

"It is the coolest thing that has happened to me on the job," Munter said.
