MacDill hero K-9 released from Tampa vet hospital

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

An Air Force K-9 named Eddie made a speedy recovery after being brought to a Tampa veterinarian suffering from heat stroke.

Eddie a 5-year-old Belgian malinois had been going through bite training at MacDill on Monday when he was overcome by the heat.

"He had a seizure prior to getting here," said veterinarian John Gicking.  "All those signs resolved over the past two days so he going home to be a normal dog at this point in time."

Eddie was in the middle of bite training at Macdill Air Force Base, when he became a victim of Monday's high temperatures and humidity.

"In Florida it can happen at anytime of the year especially exertional heat stroke," Dr. Gicking added.  "It can happen inside, so an animal who gets worked up the only way they can get rid of heat is thru panting."

His handler rushed him to Blue Pearl animal clinic where vets quickly started treating the dog.

Eddie has served the country well, helping save 14 service members in Afghanistan last year by detecting an improvised explosive before it was too late.

"One of the risk factors for heat stroke is obesity and so the animal being lean will reduce that risk, but even the best trained dogs life Eddie can suffer from heat stroke," said Dr. Gicking.

After spending a couple of nights under the clinic's care, Eddie has made a full recovery. Wednesday, he went back to MacDill ready to resume his training.
